What are the age groups/divisions provided by the SHARKS soccer program?

South Bowie offers boys and girls soccer ranging from:

5-6 year olds Pee Wees

7-18 year olds Recreational/Intermediate/Travel/Regional

What age group will my child play in?

County league players with birthdays after September 1st may play down with a younger age group. Travel league birthday cutoff date is August 1st. The Commissioner and the Coaching staff can evaluate players and make recommendations on where they are placed based upon their skill level.

How long does the season last?

Usually in 3 month cycles: The spring training usually begins in mid-March and the regular season runs from April through mid-June. The fall training begins in early to mid August. The regular season runs from September through early to mid November.

Indoor Soccer runs in 2 sessions: the 1st from November – January and the 2nd from January – March.

Summer soccer leagues run from May – July

What Clubs do we play against in the various leagues?

Currently, in the recreational PGCBGC League, we play such clubs as: Beltsville, Clinton, Ft. Washington, Glenarden, Greenbelt, Oxon Hill, Upper Marlboro, Berwyn Heights, Camp Springs, Laurel, FCI, etc.

The current recreational/intermediate AAYSA, includes clubs such  as: A3, Annapolis, Arden, Arundel, Bayshore, Bowie, Broadneck, Brooklyn Park, Cape St. Claire, CHA, Chesapeake, Columbia Soccer Club, Davidsonville, Elvaton, Fort Meade, Severna Park, Greenbelt SC, Harundale, Jessup, Linthicum, Maryland City, Monsignor Slade, Pasadena, PG Young Boys, Soccerdome, South River, etc.

Where do we play our games?

South Bowie’s home fields are located at Enfield Chase, Allen Pond Park (Andy Brown) or Church Road in South Bowie, MD. Pee Wee games are held in either Upper Marlboro or Clinton, MD and coming soon South Bowie. Games are played the various club sites throughout the County. Most games are played on Saturdays and sometimes Sunday in the PGCBGC League. In the AAYSA League, however, Fall games are played on Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays, depending on the age group. Spring games are usually played on Friday evenings and Sundays an occasionally on Saturday for make-up games.

How many games are there?

In the PGCBGC League Spring and Fall have a minimum of 8 regular season games with a playoff game and a championship game totaling 10 games. Teams have the option to (pay as you go) if they’d like to enter a tournament in the fall, winter, spring or summer.

How often is practice and where do they take place?

Teams usually practice 2 – 3 times per week before the season begins and once the season begins 2 time per week at the coaches discretion. Field usage is usually designated between 5pm & 10pm, thus practice times are held within these times at various venues throughout South Bowie, MD.

What type of equipment do I need to purchase for soccer?

South Bowie’s colors are royal blue/gold. Soccer-specific cleats and shin guards are essential. Some goalkeepers wear protective gloves and padded jerseys or shorts and some boys choose to wear a cup.

The soccer program provides players with a full uniform (jersey, shorts, socks & an alternate penny, level dependent) as part of registration fee. Climate controlled compression gear such as Under Armour can be worn during the cold months. Preferably royal blue or black.

What size soccer ball does my child need?

PGCBGC League players use a Size #4 ball for ages of 5-10. A size #5 ball for ages 11 and older. Travel Team League such as AAYSA use size #4 ball ages 8-12 and a size #5 ball for ages 13-18.
